The essentials for your East Africa trip at a glance:
Visa: Requirements differ by country — Kenya uses an eTA system since 2024, while Uganda and Rwanda use eVisas. Travellers combining multiple countries can often use the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100).
Health: A yellow fever vaccination is recommended, and in some cases required, depending on your country of origin and transit. Speak to a travel clinic or tropical medicine specialist well before departure — including advice on malaria prevention.
Packing list: Neutral, earth-toned clothing, sturdy hiking boots (especially for gorilla trekking), binoculars, sun protection, and a good camera are the essentials.
Budget: East Africa safaris can be planned from around €30–50 per day at the budget end, up to several hundred euros per day for luxury travel — see our country-specific cost articles in the Magazine for details.
