Rwanda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is alongside Uganda the second destination for gorilla trekking in East Africa — with shorter transfers from Kigali (just 2–3 hours to Volcanoes National Park) and strong tourism infrastructure, though at a higher permit cost (around USD 1,500 per person in 2026).
Kigali itself is considered one of the cleanest and safest capital cities in Africa, and makes a good starting or ending point for a wider East Africa trip.
